Simple Effects, Simple Contrasts, and Main Effect Contrasts

چکیده

Simple Effects Following a significant interaction, follow-up tests are usually needed to explore the exact nature of the interaction. Simple effects (sometimes called simple main effects) are differences among particular cell means within the design. More precisely, a simple effect is the effect of one independent variable within one level of a second independent variable. In our hypothetical example of the eyewitness study, one simple effect might involve the effect of violence only for individuals within the no training condition. Similar to the contrasts following a significant one-way ANOVA, the simple effect test uses the error term and df from the whole design. Remember that when the error term (MSs/A) is derived using all of the cases in the study, it will be generally be smaller and will result in greater statistical power. Thus, testing simple effects is preferable to using t-tests.

Using lsmeans

Least-squares means are predictions from a linear model, or averages thereof. They are useful in the analysis of experimental data for summarizing the effects of factors, and for testing linear contrasts among predictions. The lsmeans package provides a simple way of obtaining least-squares means and contrasts thereof. It supports many models fitted by R core packages (as well as a few key cont...

Analysis of Variance I.A. CAN I TEST FOR SIMPLE EFFECTS IN THE PRESENCE OF AN INSIGNIFICANT

ly, the second part of the question addresses the appropriate relation between an omnibus, overall F test of a hypothesis and tests for follow-up comparison of means that comprise a part of that global hypothesis. Overall F tests in our typical experimental world consist of two kinds-those for main effects and those for interactions. The statistics texts that address this issue tend to present ...

Complex cell receptive fields: evidence for a hierarchical mechanism.

Simple cells in the primary visual cortex have segregated ON and OFF subregions in their receptive fields, while complex cells have overlapping ON and OFF subregions. These two cell types form the extremes at each end of a continuum of receptive field types. Hubel and Wiesel in 1962 suggested a hierarchical scheme of processing whereby spatially offset simple cells drive complex cells. Simple a...

Polytomies and phylogenetically independent contrasts: examination of the bounded degrees of freedom approach.

We examined the effect of soft polytomies on the performance (Type I error rate and bias) of Felsenstein's (1985; Am. Nat. 125:1-15) method of phylogenetically independent contrasts for estimating a bivariate correlation. We specifically tested the adequacy of bounding degrees of freedom, as suggested by Purvis and Garland (1993; Syst. Biol. 42:569-575). We simulated bivariate character evoluti...

Simulation and patient studies of scatter correction in cardiac SPECT imaging

Introduction: Myocardial perfusion imaging is a nuclear medicine imaging method that is used to detect coronary artery diseases. One of the main sources of error in this imaging method is the detection of Compton scattered photons in the photopeak energy window used for data acquisition. This results in the degradation of the image contrast, and therefore decreases the...
